The dying art of DIY snow maintenance

It snows. It will always snow. Well, some years… but that is no excuse.

All people, residents and users should take some responsibility for their environment. In the last week people have done nothing but whinge about how the snow has been compacted and is now ice – unwalkable and unclearable. The shortage of grit is no excuse, I don’t understand, a good old fashioned broom will clear the snow if it is done soon enough.

The point of my ramble? That people (certainly in London) seem either too lazy or uneducated about such practices. Surely they have seen the movies at least – Americans clearing their drives together…etc.

To be fair to the populous it typically only snows once a year and only sticks about for a day and people like a day at home to play. We (I included) need little provocation to stay at home when it snows, it makes everything look clean and fun – it must be hardwired from when we were children.

If only 10% of transport staff take a day off then thousands of people don’t get to their desks and thus the loop continues – there is no point being at work if there is no one to work with. One teacher ‘snowed in’ equals 30 kids that need to be entertained, parents at home etc…

Change – what needs to happen to change this is more snow. it is only through the repartition of preparation and solution that people will learn how to live with snow, to make it less of a novelty and develop the responsibility to clean their own paths. This will alleviate the pressure on councils and allow them to focus on specific issues like road clearance, grit provision, transport.

We, the public should not wait for it to be done for us – we should bring back community; clean your neighbours’ path.

Wake up, it’s snowing.
