Wo! My first make-ish post!
I actually started modifying my earphones years ago, sticking more comfortable ‘fontopia’ outer rubbers on varying earphones. It was not therefore, a new idea for me although I was rather suprised to find the old Philips cheap rubbers fit so snug on my iPhone earphones. They make the sound quality really rather good, and due to the firmer fit they limit sound leakage in both directions, people do not hear my music at all and I can have it quieter as a result.
The only reason it is nice to use these sub standard ‘in the box’ ‘phones is that dandy mic on the wire, the ability to skip /pause /play music without getting the thing out is more than priceless.
Humm. If only more people cared, the train /tube /bus experiences of today are made rather cheap and annoying with Apple’s crap headphones! They seem to fit very few people’s ears and even the ones they do persist in playing high volume low intelligence crap. There is nothing worse than being able to hear someone elses earphones over your own; something that happens to me a lot. For me it is quality of sound not shear mass, well a good balance is good.
Whatever, I am rambling about an unimportant mod. Saying that though, I could not live without it, the quality improvement is simply so damn huge. Please copy it.
